Arriving by ferry is probably still the best option for most people. It allows you to bring everything you could want with you for your stay. There are several routes to take from the UK and since the arrival of low cost air travel and the euro tunnel prices have never been more competative!

However people have a Variety of other slightly cheap alternatives such as Cherbough (Poole and Portsmouth), Caen (Portsmouth), Dieppe(Newhaven) and Probably the mostfamour Dover - Calais route.
